Upright Freezers vs. Chest Freezers

Freezers that are attached to refrigerators can provide sufficient storage space for an individual, but a large family may need more room. Standalone freezers – available either as chest or upright models – provide a large, dedicated spot to store your family's frozen goods. If you are deciding which type of standalone freezer you should get for your home, read the pros and cons of both styles below.

Upright Freezers
  • Easily accessible and organized. When opened up, upright freezers often resemble the inside of refrigerators. Because they come equipped with shelves and drawers, food items can easily be organized, seen, and reached by users.
  • Less floor space. Upright freezers are a good choice for anyone with space limitations. Their tall, skinny build offers plenty of storage for the limited floor space they use.
  • Less energy-efficient. By design, upright freezers are less energy-efficient than chest freezers. However, they still consume significantly less energy than the average top-freezer refrigerator.
  • Less storage space. Upright freezers have the advantage of using less floor space than chest freezers, but they also have less storage space – about 15% less than chest freezers of the same size.

Chest Freezers
  • More storage space. The biggest benefit offered by chest freezers is their large storage capacity. Because they do not come equipped with shelves, all of their internal space is usable for storing food. Their shape also makes it possible to store long and irregularly shaped items that may not fit in an upright freezer.
  • More energy efficiency. Chest freezers use almost 50% less energy than their upright counterparts. A big part of this is because gravity pulls down on the top door of the chest freezer, making its seal tighter and allowing less cold air to escape.
  • Difficult to organize and access. Chest freezers typically do not have shelves, baskets, drawers, or any other tools to make organizing and finding your food easy. A lot of bending and reaching is required to get food out and it can be difficult for shorter people to reach items on the very bottom of the freezer.
  • More floor space. Another downside of chest freezers is the amount of floor space they take up. Their long shape also makes it difficult to move into some houses, especially if you have to go around corners. If you are confined by tight spaces in your home, it may be in your best interest to choose an upright freezer instead.

The Three Sources of (Almost) All Refrigerator Problems

Refrigerators never stop working. They are the only household appliance that runs 24 hours a day, which leaves them susceptible to breakdowns and malfunctions. Fortunately, many of these problems are easy to troubleshoot and can be fixed without the need of professional repair services. Learn the three sources of many common refrigerator problems and the necessary steps to correct them.

Clogged drain pipe.
Signs: The most apparent sign that your refrigerator's drain tube is clogged is the puddling of water – either inside your refrigerator or on the floor underneath it.
Solution: The drain tube runs from the freezer and drains water in a pan located underneath the refrigerator. To unclog this tube, unplug the refrigerator from the wall and locate the drain hole, which is typically located at the bottom of the unit behind the vegetable crisper. Stick a pipe cleaner or a straw in this hole and push it up and down to loosen the clog.

Faulty gasket.
Signs: If your refrigerator is not cooling foods properly or is using more electricity than normal, a faulty gasket may be the cause. To test if your gasket is performing correctly, close the refrigerator door on a dollar bill. If you can easily slide the bill up and down or remove it from the door, the seal is weak and needs to be replaced.
Solution: First, you will need to purchase a replacement gasket. They are specially designed for each refrigerator model, so make sure to get the one that is right for your refrigerator by purchasing it directly from the manufacturer or a trusted third party vendor. The old gasket can be easily removed and replaced with the new ones by following these steps.

Dirty condenser coils.
Signs: Dirty condenser coils can cause your refrigerator to overheat to the point that it feels hot to the touch. Dirty coils can also cause the refrigerator to constantly cycle on and off and your energy bill to spike.
Solution: Cleaning your refrigerator's coils requires only a vacuum and 10 minutes of your time. To clean your refrigerator's coils, unplug it and slide it away from the wall. On most models, the coils are located right on the back of the unit. After locating the coils, use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to scrub the dust off of the coils until they are visibly clear, then plug your refrigerator back in to the wall and slide it in to place.

If your refrigerator is not operating properly and it is not because of one of these three causes, there may be something seriously wrong with it. If you live in New York City or Long Island, you can rely on the professionals at Speedy Subzero to diagnose and fix your refrigerator promptly and correctly. We offer 24-hour emergency service and same-day repairs so call us today at 866-782-9376.

Everything You Need to Know About Wine Refrigerators

What are wine refrigerators?
A wine refrigerator – also known as a wine cooler or wine chiller – is a refrigerator specially designed to store bottles of wine at an ideal temperature and humidity.

Can't my normal refrigerator do that?
No. The temperature of your kitchen refrigerator is usually too cold for the proper storage of wine. Different wines should be stored and served at different temperatures, but generally speaking, 55° is around the average temperature wine should be kept at – almost 20° warmer than a normal refrigerator. It is also important for wine to be stored at a consistent temperature to maintain its integrity, and a refrigerator's temperature fluctuates every time it's opened (which is a lot!).

What should I look for when shopping for a wine refrigerator?
When shopping for a new wine refrigerator, it is important to keep your purpose in mind. The needs of the average person just looking for a better way to store their dinner wine is much different than a full-blown wine connoisseur and enthusiast. Here are some key factors to consider when purchasing a wine cooler:
  • Price. The first thing you should do when shopping for a wine refrigerator is set a budget. This step is important because if you don't have a maximum number you are able to spend, you could wind up dropping several thousands of dollars. Your budget should depend on the other factors as well, but never spend more than is comfortable for you.
  • Capacity. One of the biggest differences among different wine coolers is their capacity – some are made to store 6-8 bottles, and some can hold several dozen. This number is completely up to you, but to be safe, always buy one that can store about 20% more than you think you will need (as long as you can afford it).
  • Style. Wine refrigerators come in two distinct styles – built-in and standalone. Built-in models are designed for seamless integration into your kitchen, as they are meant to be installed directly into your cabinetry. On the other hand, standalone models can be placed anywhere there is an electrical outlet.
  • Appearance. The appearance of your wine refrigerator is important. If it is going into a kitchen or home bar, there is likely already an established theme. Wine refrigerators come in a variety of appearances including stainless steel, wood, and tempered glass.
  • Temperature zones. As previously mentioned, different types of wine call for different storage temperatures. For example, it is recommended that white wines be served at temperatures 10-15° lower than red wines. To help solve this problem, some wine cooler manufactures include multiple temperature zones – if you are willing to pay the price.
  • Other factors. Other things you should consider when buying a wine refrigerator include noise level, shelving flexibility, energy usage, reversible hinges, and whether or not you can lock it.

If you are buying a wine cooler to replace an existing, broken one, it may be worth looking at repair options first. Many times, wine coolers can be fixed for a fraction of the cost it would take to replace them. If you live in Long Island or New York City and need your wine cooler repaired, call Speedy Subzero at 866-782-9376. We offer 24/7 emergency service and same-day repairs done in the comfort of your own home.

Fact or Myth? - Refrigerators

We use refrigerators every day, but how much do we really know about them? Read through these five statements about refrigerators and see if you can determine which ones are facts and which ones are simply myths.

1. You should store milk and other dairy products on the refrigerator door.
Myth. Temperatures are generally higher near the refrigerator door than anywhere else because of the constant opening and closing. This is why you should keep condiments on the door and store spoilage-prone items such as meat and milk towards the back of the refrigerator where it stays the coldest.

2. The optimal temperature range for a refrigerator is between 35 and 39° F.
Fact. Keeping your refrigerator's temperature between 35 and 39° is the best for keeping your food fresh. Anything below 35° is too close to the freezing point of water, and anything 40° and above will promote the growth of bacteria.

3. The condenser coils on the back of your refrigerator should be cleaned once per year.
Myth. To keep your refrigerator running efficiently and your energy bill low, you should clean its condenser coils every six months. Doing so will also minimize wear-and-tear on your appliance and help prevent future breakdowns and repairs.

4. Refrigerating batteries helps them last longer.
Myth. When stored at normal room temperature, standard alkaline batteries discharge their energy at a rate of 2% per year. Storing them in the refrigerator might marginally reduce this number, but battery manufacturers recommend against doing this because it can lead to condensation and the corrosion of the batteries.

5. The compressor is essentially the heart of your refrigerator.
Fact. The compressor is the most important part of your refrigerator, much like your car's engine or your body's heart. In addition to acting as a pump to circulate the refrigerant through the system, the compressor adds heat to the liquid refrigerant by compressing it, helping to cool the inside of your refrigerator.

5 Tips for Organizing Your Fridge

A properly organized refrigerator not only looks nice and makes everything easy to find, but it can actually keep your foods fresh for longer as well. If your refrigerator is overdue for an organization overhaul, don't do it blindly – use these tips to keep a tidy fridge:
  • Keep leftovers front-and-center. When organizing your refrigerator, keep leftovers and other ready-to-eat items such as yogurt on the most eye level shelf. These priority items are likely to get eaten before they expire because they are the first thing people see when they open the refrigerator.
  • Adjust your shelves. Almost every model of refrigerator manufactured in the past decade comes standard with adjustable shelves. Since it is likely that you repeatedly purchase the same food products and store them in the same spots in your refrigerator, taking the time to adjust your shelves will establish a blueprint for where food should be stored in the future.
  • Avoid circular containers. They waste space. Instead of circular containers, opt for ones which are square or rectangular to maximize storage. To make the most of your vertical space, buy square containers which can be stacked atop one another.
  • Store drippy food on the bottom shelf. Food which commonly drips – such as red meat and chicken – should be stored on the bottom shelf to avoid the contamination of other foods. If these items drip while they are on the bottom shelf, their juices will not ruin any food below.
  • Clean out your refrigerator every two weeks. To keep your refrigerator organized and sanitary, clean it out every other week. To do this, remove all items from the refrigerator, clean any spills and sticky spots, throw away any expired food, and restock neatly.

Refrigerator Repair vs. Replacement

If your refrigerator is constantly sweating, overheating, leaking, or cycling on and off, it is warning you that not all is right. If you don't repair it soon, you will need to buy a new one. Sometimes, even repairing isn't enough and replacing is your only option. Usually though, after getting a quote you are left with a choice: repair or replace? Use the following factors to determine if your broken fridge is worth salvaging or if you should ditch it in place of a new one.

Age
The age of your refrigerator should be a key factor when determining whether you should repair it or replace it. The older the refrigerator, the higher chance of repeated breakdown, and the less availability of replacement parts. As a general rule; if it is 8 years or newer – repair it. If it is 15 years or older – replace it. If it is somewhere in between – consider other factors.

Cost of Repair
Obviously, the cost of the repair is another driving force when making this decision. If a repair is too expensive, you may as well put the money towards a brand new unit. The question that this ultimately leads to is, just how expensive is too expensive? Many experts in the field will recommend the rule of fifty: if a repair costs more than 50% of the cost of a new refrigerator, you should replace it.

Type of Refrigerator
Something that many people don't think to consider when debating between repair and replacement is the style of their refrigerator. It may sound like it doesn't matter, but the cost to repair a top-freezer model is very different than a bottom-freezer model. Even Consumer Reports recommends different actions for each style in their eight-year timeline.

If you live in Long Island and your refrigerator is broken, call Speedy Subzero at (866) 782-9376. Most of the time, we can repair your refrigerator in your home on the same day you call for a fraction of the cost it would take to replace it. How To Clean Refrigerator Condenser Coils

Refrigerators are the hardest working appliance in our kitchens and might be the most neglected as well. Because they run 24/7, there are some basic maintenance procedures that should be followed in order to help them run efficiently and extend their lifespan. One of these often overlooked procedures is cleaning the condenser coils. To quickly clean yours in 5 steps, follow these instructions:

  1. Turn off the refrigerator and slide it away from the wall.
  2. Locate the condenser coils. On most refrigerators, they are located on the back of the unit, but some newer models now keep them behind the toe panel at the bottom.
  3. Brush the coils to loosen up the dust and dirt. Manufacturers sell specializes brushes for this, but you can use a small paint brush, pipe cleaner, or even an old toothbrush.
  4. Vacuum the coils. To completely clean these coils, you should vacuum them using your cleaner's brush attachment. While doing this, be careful not to damage the fins or coil, as they are not cheap nor easy to repair.
  5. Plug the refrigerator into the wall and slide it back into its starting position.

That's all it takes to thoroughly clean your refrigerator's coils. Even though it is quick and easy, it is still extremely important you do it once every six months for the life of your appliance.

Refrigerator Cleaning Checklist

Your refrigerator is the hardest working appliance in your kitchen, so every once in a while it is good to show it some appreciation with a thorough cleaning. Since they store all of your food, refrigerators invite messes, spills, and sticky spots. Use the following checklist to leave your fridge as clean as new in only 15 minutes.
  • Remove all food from your refrigerator. The first step to cleaning your refrigerator is to remove all of the food items from it. The entire cleaning process should take 15 minutes or less, but if you are worried about your meat or dairy products going bad, you can store them in a cooler while you clean your refrigerator.
  • Remove the shelves and wash them. After the food is completely taken out of the refrigerator, take out all of the shelves and drawers and wash them in the sink with a sponge and mild dish detergent. Most of the grime and spills on these can be removed quickly with some warm water and soap, but you might have to scrub to get some of the tougher stains out.
  • Wipe down the interior. Once the refrigerator is bare, wipe down all interior surfaces with a wet cloth and a little bit of soap if necessary. Make sure that you completely dry the interior before moving on to the next step.
  • Refill the refrigerator and organize your food. If your shelves are still wet, dry them with a towel and place them back in the refrigerator. Then, start replacing your food items one by one. As you are putting everything back in its place, check expiration dates. If a food has expired or you don't plan to consume it before it does expire, throw it away.

Now your refrigerator should be sparkling clean, organized, and free of spoiled foods!

Refrigerator Organization Tips

Refrigerators are the hardest working appliance in our kitchens. They are the only unit that runs 24/7 and gets used several times each and every day. After purchasing a new refrigerator, many people have a “set it and forget it” attitude, but rethinking the way you organize your food will allow you to fit more in it than you ever could have imagined.

Store foods in the right place
Where you store certain foods in your refrigerator can impact how long they last. Items which are resistant to spoiling – such as juice, water, and condiments – should be stored on the door because temperatures fluctuate the most there. Likewise, foods which go bad quickly like meats and milk should be kept on the bottom shelf where it is the coldest. Vegetables and fruits should be stored in separate crisper drawers with the proper humidity settings to extend their freshness.

Reorganize your refrigerator's shelves.
Almost every new refrigerator comes equipped with adjustable shelves. This function provides you with storage flexibility and allows you to fit nearly any food item comfortably in your refrigerator. Think about what foods you typically buy and rearrange your shelves to make access to these items more convenient and space-efficient.

Stack similar containers.
Another way to make the most out of the limited space inside of your refrigerator is to keep food in stackable containers. If you constantly find your refrigerator stocked with Tupperware containers full of leftovers, storing them on top of one another can more than double the amount of space you have for other items.

Add to your usable space.
If you have a lot of space on the inside of your refrigerator or freezer going to waste due to a lack of shelves, there are some creative ways to solve this problem. Magazine racks can be turned on their sides and stacked on top of each other to add some quick shelves to your freezer, as Aunt Peaches shows in this article. You can also buy shelf risers for your refrigerator and store small, fragile items like eggs and bread underneath them.

Consequences of Poor Fridge Maintenance

We have previously talked about how to keep your refrigerator looking and running like new, but not everybody will follow these steps. Just like with a car, failing to properly maintain your kitchen appliances will catch up with you sooner or later. A poor maintenance routine for your refrigerator will have short-term and long-term consequences.

Short-Term Problems
Not properly taking care of your refrigerator will be noticed immediately, most notably in your electric bill. Neglecting simple tasks, such as cleaning the condenser coils, can really hurt your appliance's energy-efficiency. Failure to periodically inspect the door gasket is another way for your refrigerator's energy consumption to skyrocket. A faulty seal will result in cold air escaping, which your refrigerator must replace by working harder and using more electricity. Over time, this increase in energy can add begin to add up.

Long-Term Problems
A poor refrigerator maintenance routine will eventually cost you more than a higher utility bill. It places a heavier workload on your refrigerator's compressor, and the wear and tear adds up. Over the course of several years, this added work will catch up to your appliance in the form of malfunctions and defects. If you are not regularly examining the different parts of your refrigerator, you will not see the warning signs that a breakdown is on the horizon. Even the most simple of refrigerator repairs can be expensive, and if your unit is broken beyond saving, buying a new one will set you back several hundreds of dollars.

Getting into a regular maintenance routine for your refrigerator is a great way to prevent future problems, but still nothing is 100% effective. If your refrigerator needs to be repaired and you live in the Long Island area, call Speedy Subzero. We have over 75 years of experience and offer one-hour service. Things to Consider When Buying a New Refrigerator

Thanksgiving is just a couple of weeks away, and so is Black Friday. If you are planning on taking advantage of this year's price-cuts by purchasing a new refrigerator, you should go prepared. Here are four things that you will want to think about before buying your new refrigerator.

  • Size. Refrigerators come in a variety of different sizes. Sometimes, your sizing choice will be based on personal needs, such as the size of your family and how much food you consume. However, if your new refrigerator will be placed in between existing kitchen cabinets, its size will be restricted to the dimensions of the opening.
  • Style. Typically, refrigerators come in four primary styles; top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and french door. In addition to appearance, each style provides differences in functionality and operation. The pros and cons of each style of refrigerator can be found here.
  • Energy Efficiency. How energy efficient your refrigerator is will determine its long-term cost of operation. If you are trying to minimize how much energy your refrigerator uses, look for models with an Energy Star tag on them. You will pay a little more at the time of purchase for these, but they will pay for themselves with the energy they save you.
  • Extra features. If you are willing to pay the price, there are a variety of fresh, innovative features available on new refrigerators. If your budget allows for it, maybe you will want to consider a refrigerator with an automatic water dispenser or a speed-cooling compartment for your soda cans.

If you are purchasing a new refrigerator to replace a broken model, you should check to see if you can fix the old one for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. Speedy Subzero is a refrigerator repair service in Nassau County, New York. With one-hour service from the time of your call and over 70 years of experience, we are Long Island's number one choice for refrigerator repairs. How to Keep Your Refrigerator Cold During a Power Outage

Winter is almost here, and for those of us who live in cold climates that means snow is on the way. It seems every winter has at least one bad storm, and heavy snow often leads to power outages. In the event that your power goes out, use these tips to preserve the foods in your refrigerator and freezer for as long as possible.
  • Only open your refrigerator when absolutely necessary. This one should be obvious – every time you open the door to your refrigerator or freezer, valuable cold air escapes. When you go into the refrigerator, think a half an hour into the future; if you think you are going to need anything else within 30 minutes, take it out at the same time to help conserve the cold air.
  • If the weather is cold, pack items in a cooler and store them outside. If your power goes out due to a snow storm, it may be wise to pack some of your items in a cooler and leave it outside, especially if the power might be out for a while. Keep the cooler out of direct sunlight though, and do not use this tip if you live in an area with dangerous wildlife – the scent of food may attract them.
  • Cover the refrigerator in blankets to insulate it. Covering your refrigerator with thick blankets and newspaper is a great way to keep it insulated and extend the amount of time which it will keep your food cold. Be careful not to cover the vents in the back of the unit in case the power comes back on overnight.
  • When in doubt, throw it out. If there is any doubt in your mind about whether or not a food item is safe to consume, play it safe and throw it away. The reward is not worth the risks associated with eating spoiled food, such as food poisoning.

Speedy Subzero is a New York-based service specializing in the repairs of Subzero refrigerators. If you are experiencing difficulties with your refrigerator, freezer, ice-maker, or wine cooler call us at (866) 782-9376. We offer around-the-clock emergency service and can be at your door in one hour from the time your call was placed. For more tips, follow us on Twitter or like our Facebook page.

3 Remedies for Eliminating Refrigerator Odors

Refrigerators are wonderful appliances. They run 24/7 to keep our food fresh and our drinks refreshing. In fact, Smithsonian magazine dubbed the refrigerator as “The Most Important Invention in the History of Food.” Still, refrigerators are not perfect machines. It is possible for them to break down and leak – which they often do. The fact that they store food also leaves them susceptible to housing terrible odors – which they often do. If your refrigerator stinks to high heavens, use these three homemade remedies to freshen it up a little bit.

Baking Soda
Baking Soda is probably the official refrigerator deodorizer of your grandmother. Seriously. It has been the go-to choice for several decades, and for good reason. Simply open a box of baking soda and stick it on the top shelf of your refrigerator for at least 24 hours to absorb the foul smells.

Coffee Grounds
Coffee grounds are unsuspectingly good at absorbing the scents from other foods in the fridge. It is for this reason that, under normal circumstances, you shouldn't refrigerate them. However, if you are trying to get rid of a smell, cover a plate with coffee grounds and place it in the refrigerator overnight.

Vanilla
For the tougher smells that baking soda and coffee grounds won't get rid of, you can use vanilla extract to overpower them. This will provide a very strong smell, so be careful not to use too much of it. Take two cotton balls and dampen them with a little bit of vanilla extract. Put the cotton balls on a small dish and stick them in the fridge uncovered for 12 hours.

Speedy Subzero has been repairing refrigerators and freezers in Long Island and Queens for more than 75 years. Our trained technicians are on call 24/7 and offer one hour emergency service for when the problem simply can't wait. Visit our website for more information or check out our Facebook page.

Sources of Condensation in Your Refrigerator

Your refrigerator is the only appliance in your house which is constantly operating. Because refrigerators are working 24/7, it is not uncommon for them to malfunction. One of the most common problems with refrigerators is condensation. Condensation occurs when warm air holding moisture comes in contact with a cool surface. As the air cools, it is no longer able to retain the moisture, so it is transferred to the cooler surface in the form of condensation. When this occurs with your refrigerator, it signals the presence of warm air, which is not a good sign. Here is a list of the most common causes of condensation, and what you can do to fix them.

Faulty Door Gasket
When opening your refrigerator door, you may have noticed a rubber strip called a gasket. The gasket runs along the edge of the refrigerator door and acts as a seal to keep the cold air in your refrigerator and the warm air out. If your refrigerator is having a condensation problem, the most likely cause is a leaky gasket. To quickly test if yours is working efficiently, close the fridge door on a dollar bill. If you can easily remove or slide the dollar up and down, you should replace your gasket immediately. Luckily, gaskets can be quickly removed and replacements are generally cheap and easy to find.

Dirty Condenser Coils
If your gasket doesn't appear to be the problem, slide your refrigerator away from the wall and look at the condenser coils. If they are dirty, clean them with a vacuum using a brush attachment. When these coils become thoroughly covered in dust and dirt, it can prevent heat from escaping the refrigerator. Also, make sure to leave at least a 6 inch gap between the back of your fridge and the wall to allow for adequate ventilation.

Clogged Defrost Drain
If the defrost drain is the problem, it will likely lead to the pooling of water as opposed to condensation on the interior walls. The drain pipe is located on the bottom of the refrigerator, usually under the crisper drawers. Inspect it for dirt and debris which may be causing a clog. If there is a blockage, it can usually be removed with a number of household items including toothpicks, cotton swabs, and drinking straws.

If you have followed all of these steps and there is still a condensation in your refrigerator, you may have a serious problem. If you live in Long Island or New York City, getting your fridge repaired is a quick phone call away. Speedy Subzero has been servicing refrigerators and freezers in the tri-state area for over 50 years. We provide 24/7 service and can be at your door within an hour of your phone call. Perhaps the worst culprit of this is the pineapple. This tool allows users to peel, core, and slice a pineapple in 30 seconds. It cuts perfectly-shaped rings out of the fruit and preserves the core to use as a bowl.

How to Keep Your Refrigerator Looking and Running Like New

If you have a new refrigerator, chances are it set you back several hundreds of dollars. The average lifespan of a new fridge is slightly longer than a decade, but not all models last that long. If you want to extend the lifespan of your refrigerator and protect your investment, there are steps you can take to do so. Follow the tips below to keep your refrigerator looking and running like new.

Clean the condenser coils twice per year
It is inevitable for the condenser coils on the back of your refrigerator to become covered with dust and dirt after several months. It is common for owners to neglect this part of refrigerator maintenance, usually because they don't know how important they are to keep clean. Vacuuming these coils twice per year can do wonders for extending your refrigerator's life span.

Give your refrigerator a full cleaning monthly
Cleaning the inside and outside of your refrigerator once per month will help maintain its sparkling-new appearance. A full cleaning involves removing all food, shelves, and drawers and giving the inside surface a full wipe down with a cleaning agent and a cloth. You should also wash all shelves and drawers in the sink before replacing them in your refrigerator. After the inside is clean, wash all outside surfaces with a sponge – this includes the sides and top.

Keep your fridge full, but not too full
Refrigerators operate most efficiently when they are full. The more food you have in the refrigerator, the better it maintains its internal temperature when the door is opened. This reduces the workload on the compressor, which can really add up over time. If your refrigerator is usually empty, consider adding a few jugs of water to fill it up a little bit. Be careful though, over-stuffing a refrigerator can restrict airflow and actually lead to warm spots.

Routinely check your door seals
The rubber seals on your refrigerator door prevent cold air from escaping and warm air from entering. A faulty seal causes the internal temperature of your refrigerator to rise, which adds wear and tear to the unit's compressor. An easy way to test if your seals are operating at maximum performance is to close your refrigerator door on a dollar bill. If it is easy to slide or remove the dollar bill, you have a weak seal. Luckily, they are cheap and easy to replace.

Pros and Cons of Each Refrigerator Style

If you are buying a new refrigerator for the first time in a while, you may have noticed the abundance of options which are now available to you. Buying a refrigerator is no longer a simple choice, and many things need to be taken into consideration before a purchase is made. One of the first things you will want to consider is the style of refrigerator you will want. Generally speaking, refrigerators come in four categories – top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and French door. A basic list of the pros and cons of each type can be found below.

Top Freezer models are what you likely picture when you think of a refrigerator. These traditional models feature the freezer located above the fresh food compartment.
  • Pros – These classic refrigerators are usually the cheapest to buy and repair. On average, they offer the most usable space per cubic foot and the doors swing open wide to allow shelves and bins to be removed.
  • Cons – The wide-swinging doors of these models require more space to be opened fully. These models also tend to have less features available to them.

Bottom Freezer refrigerators are the inverse of their top-freezer counterparts. The fresh food compartment is elevated to a more convenient height, and the freezer is usually accessed via pull-out drawer.
  • Pros – As mentioned, much of the fresh food section is at eye level, which is very convenient because it is used much more than the freezer in most homes. This type of refrigerator is also one of the most energy-efficient styles.
  • Cons – Because the freezer is now at the bottom, you will have to bend over to access it. Bottom-freezer models are also more expensive than top-freezer alternatives.

French Door refrigerators are a special kind of bottom-freezer model where the fresh food compartment has two doors that can be pulled open to reveal a very spacious interior.
  • Pros – The French door refrigerator combines the benefits of bottom-freezer and side-by-side models. The shelf width of these types allow for easy storage of platters and pizza boxes. The narrow doors do not require as much space to be opened and these models offer a variety of features.
  • Cons – The biggest drawback of French door refrigerators is their high price tag.

Side-By-Side models are unique because the fresh food and frozen compartments both take up the full height of the unit and are divided vertically down the refrigerator.
  • Pros – The side-by-side placement of the doors allows for a convenient height to access both the fresh and frozen food compartments. Also, like the French door model, narrow doors require less space for opening. This type allows for the most freezer space of all of the refrigerator styles.
  • Cons – The narrow sections do not handle wide platters well and sometimes make items in the back difficult to find. More freezer space results in less fresh food space and these models are typically pricier than top-freezer or bottom-freezer models. Side-by-side refrigerators are not energy-efficient.

How to Move a Refrigerator - The Right Way

If you are in the process of moving to a new living space without the help of a moving company, dealing with appliances will likely be your biggest problem. Refrigerators can be especially difficult due to their large dimensions and heavy weight. But where there is a will, there is a way – so if you are ready to conquer this challenge, this guide is here to help you.

What You Will Need
  • A friend or two – moving a refrigerator is at least a two person job, three would be ideal.
  • A moving dolly
  • Moving straps
  • Rope or bungee cords
  • Masking or scotch tape

Step 1: Remove all items from the refrigerator. Remove everything that can be removed from the inside of your refrigerator and freezer. This includes food items, ice cube trays, and adjustable shelves. You can also remove the drawers or tape them shut – whichever you prefer. You should also remove all exterior items, such as magnets.

Step 2: Defrost. After everything is removed from the refrigerator, unplug it from the wall and allow all of the ice in the freezer to melt. This process will take several hours, so it is a good idea to do it overnight. After it is unplugged, secure the power cord so it does not get in the way during the moving process. A simple way of doing this is taping it to the side of the unit.

Step 3: Clean the inside. When your refrigerator has defrosted, dry the inside thoroughly with a towel. Once it is all dry, it is a good idea to give the entire interior a wipe down with your favorite cleaning agent. This will prevent mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors from developing during the move.

Step 4: Secure the doors. Use your bungee cords or rope to tie the refrigerator doors shut so there is no chance of them opening during the moving process. Using tape will likely leave sticky residue along the exterior.

Step 5: Load the refrigerator onto the dolly. With most refrigerators, you will simply be able to slide the dolly right underneath the base. Make sure the back of the dolly is firmly pressed against the refrigerator and tie it in place with moving straps. This is a particularly good idea if you have to go down stairs.

Step 6: Move it onto the truck. Once the refrigerator is securely positioned on the dolly, tip it back and begin making your way to the truck with one person in back and one person in front helping to guide the process. Always move forward, or opposite the position that the refrigerator is tilted, to maintain optimal safety.

When moving the refrigerator down a flight of stairs, slow and steady is the key. Take it one step at a time, literally, and have one or two people easing the bottom on to each step. Always make sure to be communicating so that everyone is on the same page.

When loading the refrigerator onto the moving truck, pull the dolly instead of pushing it (or moving it backwards as opposed to forwards). Unload it from the dolly and place it upright. Try to secure it by barricading it with other heavy furniture to make sure it maintains an upright position throughout the move. It is important that the refrigerator stays upright so that oil from the compressor does not mix with the coolant.

Step 7: Unload it and put it in its new position.
When you arrive at your new home, move the refrigerator into its new place using the same method you used to get it in the truck. Plug it in immediately and give it at least a full 24 hours to cool to a sufficient temperature before putting any perishable food in it.

4 Ways to Save Energy in the Kitchen

Whether the reasons are environmentally- or economically-based, people across the country are trying to reduce their energy consumption. One place that leaves a great amount of room for improvement is the kitchen. Every day, we go through our cooking routines much in the same way that we have been for our whole lives – usually without second-guessing our actions. These routines that we inherited from our parents or developed on our own are often not as environmentally-friendly as they could be. Here are four quick, easy, and free ways to reduce the amount of energy that you and your kitchen consume.

Be mindful of pots and pans on the stove top.
When cooking on the stove top, use a burner that is the same size of the pot or pan you will be using. Placing a 6” pan on a 8” burner may sound harmless, but the truth is that almost 50% of the heat generated by your stove top will be wasted. Keeping lids on these will further increase heat retention, and thus save energy. You can also turn the heat down when your water reaches a boil.

Turn off the oven early.
If you are cooking a meal in the oven for 25 minutes at 400°, you can turn the oven off after 20 and let the existing heat cook your food for the remainder of the period. This works even better if you refrain from opening the oven door to check on your food and instead look through the glass with the oven light on. This lesson can also be applied to boiling pasta on the stove top – just make sure you have a lid on the pot.

Only use the water you need.
When cooking food which requires you to boil water – such as potatoes, pasta, or eggs – use only as much water as you will need. Many of us put in much more water than is necessary just to “be safe”, but that hurts the energy-efficiency of your appliances. Simple physics will tell you that more time and energy is required to boil one gallon of water on your stove than one pint.

Bigger is not always better.
When trying to save energy, think small. This is especially true in the kitchen. When making a personal-sized meal, opt for the microwave or toaster oven over your conventional oven. Is the food processor really necessary, or will the blender suffice? These are the kinds of decisions you should be making in your daily life to cut down on energy consumption around the house.

4 Cool Features of New Refrigerators

If you are in the market for a new refrigerator, now is a better time to buy than ever. With advancements in technology and manufacturers focusing on the customer, there are features available to you which did not exist just a few years ago. While they may not be life-changing nor vital, they are pretty cool (no pun intended). Here are four of the best features included in some new models:

Chill your warm can of soda in minutes
If you have ever opened your refrigerator door only to find out that you forgot to put your soda cans in the night before, this is for you. Instead of waiting hours for them to cool in the refrigerator or putting a can or two in the freezer and forgetting about them, modern technology solves your problem in a matter of minutes. LG offers new models featuring their Blast Chiller technology, which can cool a 12-ounce can in just five minutes.

Cool your hot leftovers fast
It is advised that you let hot foods cool before putting them in the refrigerator in order to prevent the warming up of others foods around it, but now it's okay to break the rules. Some new refrigerators come equipped with high-tech sensors which automatically adjust temperature settings when warm food is detected.

Time-based alarms built in to the door
Have you ever walked in to your kitchen to find that the refrigerator had been left open? Maybe you didn't fully close the door when you kicked it and walked into the living room an hour ago. Not only does this situation put your food in danger of spoiling quicker, but your refrigerator has to use a lot of energy to bring its temperature back down. Refrigerator manufacturers have thought about this, and have implemented an alarm which will sound when the door has been left open for several minutes.

Bigger and better water dispensers
Having a water dispenser on your refrigerator door used to be a luxury – now it is almost a necessity. Companies such as GE and LG have taken water dispensers to the next level with a variety of new features available. Extra tall dispensers now allow you to fill glasses, pitchers, and water bottles easier than ever without putting them at awkward angles. Some models even let you walk away from the dispenser while it automatically fills your container to the volume of your choice.

Before buying a new refrigerator, it is wise to make sure that yours cannot be repaired for a fraction of the cost.
