How Do Refrigerators Work?

Before you learn about how your refrigerator works, it is necessary to understand two scientific principles:
  1. Gas cools down as it expands.
  2. When two surfaces of different temperatures come in contact, the warmer surface cools down and the cooler surface warms up.

Knowing these two points, we can now illustrate how the household refrigerator keeps your food cold.
  1. The refrigerant inside your refrigerator's tubes, currently in a gaseous state, passes through the compressor. This causes its temperature to rise.
  2. The refrigerant moves through internal pipes and loses some of its heat through exhaust fins in the back of the unit.
  3. The refrigerant reaches the condenser where its temperature is reduced and it turns into a liquid.
  4. The liquid refrigerant flows through the expansion valve, causing some of the liquid to evaporate and expand, further lowering the temperature.
  5. As the refrigerant continues to make its way through your refrigerator, it absorbs the heat from your food (remember principle #2) and turns back into a gas.
  6. The gas is sucked back in to the compressor where the cycle starts all over.

How to Clean Your Refrigerator’s Drip Pan



An important, yet little-known component of your refrigerator is the drip pan. If you own an auto-defrosting refrigerator, excess water from your freezer flows through the drain pipe as it defrosts and empties into the drip pan. Most of this water quickly evaporates, but sometimes it will sit and provide a place for bacteria to develop. If you notice unpleasant odors coming from your refrigerator, or the thought of bacteria growing under your fridge bothers you, here is how to clean your drip pan:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator from the wall
  2. Locate your refrigerator’s drip pan. On most models, it is located on the bottom of the unit, behind the toe kick plate. If you are having difficulty locating yours, refer to your refrigerator’s owners manual.
  3. Remove the toe kick plate from the bottom of your refrigerator.
  4. Put on rubber gloves and slide out the drain pan. Do it slowly, if there is a lot of water, it could splash.
  5. Wash the pan under hot water using a scrubbing brush and dish detergent. Scrub until all visible grime is gone.
  6. Completely dry off the drip pan and place it back under the refrigerator. Replace the kick plate and plug the refrigerator back into the outlet.
