Sources of Condensation in Your Refrigerator

Your refrigerator is the only appliance in your house which is constantly operating. Because refrigerators are working 24/7, it is not uncommon for them to malfunction. One of the most common problems with refrigerators is condensation. Condensation occurs when warm air holding moisture comes in contact with a cool surface. As the air cools, it is no longer able to retain the moisture, so it is transferred to the cooler surface in the form of condensation. When this occurs with your refrigerator, it signals the presence of warm air, which is not a good sign. Here is a list of the most common causes of condensation, and what you can do to fix them.

Faulty Door Gasket
When opening your refrigerator door, you may have noticed a rubber strip called a gasket. The gasket runs along the edge of the refrigerator door and acts as a seal to keep the cold air in your refrigerator and the warm air out. If your refrigerator is having a condensation problem, the most likely cause is a leaky gasket. To quickly test if yours is working efficiently, close the fridge door on a dollar bill. If you can easily remove or slide the dollar up and down, you should replace your gasket immediately. Luckily, gaskets can be quickly removed and replacements are generally cheap and easy to find.

Dirty Condenser Coils
If your gasket doesn't appear to be the problem, slide your refrigerator away from the wall and look at the condenser coils. If they are dirty, clean them with a vacuum using a brush attachment. When these coils become thoroughly covered in dust and dirt, it can prevent heat from escaping the refrigerator. Also, make sure to leave at least a 6 inch gap between the back of your fridge and the wall to allow for adequate ventilation.

Clogged Defrost Drain
If the defrost drain is the problem, it will likely lead to the pooling of water as opposed to condensation on the interior walls. The drain pipe is located on the bottom of the refrigerator, usually under the crisper drawers. Inspect it for dirt and debris which may be causing a clog. If there is a blockage, it can usually be removed with a number of household items including toothpicks, cotton swabs, and drinking straws.
