Refrigerator Repair vs. Replacement

If your refrigerator is constantly sweating, overheating, leaking, or cycling on and off, it is warning you that not all is right. If you don't repair it soon, you will need to buy a new one. Sometimes, even repairing isn't enough and replacing is your only option. Usually though, after getting a quote you are left with a choice: repair or replace? Use the following factors to determine if your broken fridge is worth salvaging or if you should ditch it in place of a new one.

Age
The age of your refrigerator should be a key factor when determining whether you should repair it or replace it. The older the refrigerator, the higher chance of repeated breakdown, and the less availability of replacement parts. As a general rule; if it is 8 years or newer – repair it. If it is 15 years or older – replace it. If it is somewhere in between – consider other factors.

Cost of Repair
Obviously, the cost of the repair is another driving force when making this decision. If a repair is too expensive, you may as well put the money towards a brand new unit. The question that this ultimately leads to is, just how expensive is too expensive? Many experts in the field will recommend the rule of fifty: if a repair costs more than 50% of the cost of a new refrigerator, you should replace it.

Type of Refrigerator
Something that many people don't think to consider when debating between repair and replacement is the style of their refrigerator. It may sound like it doesn't matter, but the cost to repair a top-freezer model is very different than a bottom-freezer model. Even Consumer Reports recommends different actions for each style in their eight-year timeline.
